Clean teeth for great oral
health from your hygienist
Routine dental hygiene visits are essential – after all, the leading cause of tooth loss is poor gum health and not tooth decay. Maintaining gum health by visiting our highly skilled hygienists will lead to improving the longevity of your teeth.
Why is it important to visit a dental hygienist?
Maintaining great daily hygiene at home keeps gum disease and tooth decay at bay. By working with a hygienist as well, you can ensure even better oral health. The hygienist will be able to access the hard to reach or missed areas of your mouth, giving you the following benefits:
- Reduced risk of early inflamed gums (gingivitis) and advanced gum disease (periodontitis).
- There is less chance of needing potentially unnecessary and avoidable treatment in the future.
- Helps you keep your natural teeth, gums or implants for longer.
- Helps avoid the consequences of gum disease in the mouth, including bad breath, bleeding gums, loose teeth and tooth loss, plus drifting and uneven teeth.
- Helps avoid the consequences of advanced gum disease to the rest of the body, primarily diabetes, heart and vascular disease, plus other conditions such as Alzheimer’s and lung disease (pneumonia).
Many people who come to us have suffered the consequences of bad oral hygiene and need teeth taken out – don’t let that be you! By coming to us early we can stop the disease process from starting and even if you have gum disease, don’t delay as we can always help.
What does a
dental hygienist do?
A dental hygienist is responsible for promoting your oral health, providing treatment to prevent and manage periodontal (gum) disease.
- Your hygienist works closely with other members of the dental team who will prescribe preventive and non-invasive treatments to help you overcome the early signs of periodontal disease.
- Prevention and regular care are essential for keeping your teeth, gums and mouth healthy.
- If your gum disease is more advanced we may recommend seeing a gum specialist (periodontist) within the group who will be able to help manage it and give more complex and advanced treatment solutions.
- We usually recommend seeing a hygienist every six months, but this will depend on the overall health of your gums and your risk status. Some people are more prone to advanced gum disease and therefore require more care.

Smile Gallery
We help you maintain good oral health and improve the appearance of your teeth, with hygiene appointments to suit you.
Do you need another service?
If your gum disease is more advanced, we will usually recommend gum treatment with one of our highly qualified dentists.
A hygienist can only remove staining – your teeth won’t look dramatically whiter. If you want whiter teeth and stain removal with a hygienist isn’t enough, you might also like to consider teeth whitening treatments.
